Argentum AI, an independent cloud provider backed by Super Micro Computer (SMCI), is in advanced talks with a major private credit institution for a $5 billion financing package, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing two people familiar with the transaction. SMCI shares rose about 7% on the news.
What will the $5 billion buy?
The capital will fund additional graphics processing units (GPUs) for a 300-megawatt facility in Poland that Argentum secured earlier alongside DL Invest Group and cloud gaming provider Boosteroid.
One source said the structured debt is specifically intended to finance chips leased to clients without investment-grade credit ratings. Despite that client profile, Argentum has accumulated more than $12 billion in contracted revenue, the source added.
In plain terms: Argentum is borrowing against future chip leases to expand a Polish data center by 300 megawatts of capacity.
Who is Argentum AI?
Founded in 2025 and led by Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sobko, the Chicago-based startup builds institutional-grade infrastructure for enterprise-scale artificial intelligence deployments. The company previously said it was working with major U.S. financial institutions and investment banks to design flexible financing models for future infrastructure growth.
SMCI stock has gained about 16% year-to-date.
How tight is credit for neoclouds?
The talks underline a shifting financial picture for specialized "neoclouds" — firms that rent high-performance AI computing clusters to third-party enterprises. Debt financing has tightened significantly across the sector as investors question profitability outside core AI data center demand.
Elon Musk weighed in publicly. In a recent post on X, he wrote that debt markets have nearly cut off liquidity to firms lacking diversified revenue streams and warned that 200-plus neoclouds will see "guppy-level death and consolidation."
By contrast, firms with strong balance sheets and robust cash flows continue to raise capital. SpaceX recently arranged a $40 billion chip debt facility through an Apollo Global Management affiliate. Nebius, backed by Nvidia (NVDA), secured a $3.5 billion facility from Citi to accelerate GPU acquisitions and data center expansion.
The takeaway: lenders are splitting the neocloud market into haves and have-nots, and Argentum is positioning itself among the former.
What did markets do?
SMCI stock added about 7% on Tuesday. Retail sentiment on Stocktwits sat in "bullish" territory with "high" message volumes at the time of writing.
A $5 billion structured deal for a company founded in 2025 would rank Argentum among the largest private-credit-financed GPU buyers in a market where most of its smaller rivals cannot borrow at all.
