Hyundai AutoEver (307950) will invest 114.608 billion won, approximately $85.8 million, to acquire a 26% stake in a GPU services joint venture at the heart of Hyundai Motor Group's Saemangeum AI data center project. The company disclosed the decision in a regulatory filing after its board resolved on the 30th to buy 1,146,080 shares in "HMG AI Factory," a joint venture to be established in November under that working name.

The outlay equals 6.1% of Hyundai AutoEver's equity capital of 1.8747 trillion won, roughly $1.4 billion, based on last year's consolidated financial statements. Payment runs in six installments from this year through 2031, with the final acquisition date set at December 31, 2031.

  • Investment target: HMG AI Factory (working name), incorporation in November
  • Shares acquired: 1,146,080
  • Amount: 114.608 billion won (~$85.8 million)
  • Equity capital ratio: 6.1%
  • Stake after acquisition: 26%
  • Payment: Six installments, 2026–2031

What will the joint venture do?

The venture's business is GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS). It will install graphics processing units and other computing equipment at the Saemangeum AI data center and rent computing resources to companies and research institutions on demand through cloud services. Before the data center is completed, the JV plans to launch operations at other sites. In the filing, Hyundai AutoEver stated the investment's purpose as "pursuing the GPUaaS business."

Hyundai Motor Group is splitting the project into two special-purpose companies: one for data center construction, one for GPU service operation. Hyundai AutoEver joins the side that secures high-performance GPUs and supplies computing resources and services. Once incorporation and the investment close, the JV will be consolidated as an affiliate of Hyundai AutoEver.

The move is the first major infrastructure investment by a company that has until now built IT systems and developed software within the group.

How large is the Saemangeum project?

Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest about 9 trillion won, approximately $6.7 billion, in Saemangeum to build an industrial hub combining a robot manufacturing cluster, solar power generation and hydrogen production. Of that total, about 5.8 trillion won, roughly $4.3 billion, is allocated to the AI data center.

The facility will be built at a scale of 100MW, with the goal of securing more than 50,000 GPUs over the long term. Five affiliates are participating: Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Hyundai AutoEver. The group targets bringing the data center online in 2030. The Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency began a building review in September, and a groundbreaking is under discussion for March 2027.

Why does this change Hyundai AutoEver's business model?

Until now, Hyundai AutoEver signed GPU server supply contracts with Hyundai Motor and Kia and delivered equipment. Its integrated purchase and supply contract with Hyundai Motor grew to about 199.6 billion won, approximately $149.4 million, after items were added in August, and it holds a large supply contract with Kia as well.

That work extended the systems integration business of buying and handing over servers. The company now moves up a level to directly holding a stake in a company that owns and operates infrastructure. High-performance GPUs for repeated training on large volumes of data are essential to developing autonomous driving, robotics and manufacturing AI, so internal group demand provides a stable foundation.

What are the financial risks?

Profitability will take time to confirm. GPUaaS carries a heavy initial capital burden for GPUs, servers, power and cooling facilities, and results depend on customer acquisition, utilization rates and usage pricing. As AI chip performance improves quickly, equipment replacement costs will keep arising.

Hyundai AutoEver did not disclose the JV's expected revenue, operating profit or investment payback period, nor a specific customer mix or pricing structure. The investment is not a contract guaranteeing separate revenue. Medium- and long-term growth hinges on whether the company can secure outside customers beyond group affiliates.

The market reads the deal as a software company expanding into an infrastructure operator amid the group's AI transformation. Expectations are emerging that once data center construction gets fully under way, a revenue structure linking server supply, operations and cloud services could take shape. The installment schedule running through 2031 suggests funds may continue to be injected for additional GPU procurement and facility expansion even after the initial buildout. Hyundai AutoEver delegated authority over transaction details to its CEO, and the filing lists no separate agreements such as put options.

The unanswered question is whether demand beyond the group will arrive fast enough to justify six years of installments.
