- Hyundai affiliates will build an AI data center within the 9 trillion won ($6.74bn) Saemangeum AI Valley project.
- Construction could start in March 2027, with official services launching in early 2030.
- Hyundai previously said it aims to invest 5.8 trillion won ($4.3bn) in Saemangeum data centers hosting 50,000 GPUs.
- Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai E&C, and Hyundai AutoEver are forming an SPC plus a GPU services corporation.
- Financing draws on MoUs signed this year with the Korea Development Bank, Export-Import Bank of Korea, Industrial Bank of Korea, and Korea Credit Guarantee Fund.

Hyundai Motor Group has officially decided to build an AI data center inside the 9 trillion won ($6.74bn) Saemangeum AI Valley, with construction potentially starting in March 2027 and commercial services launching in early 2030.
The group announced this week it is "accelerating its investment" in the project. Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai E&C, and Hyundai AutoEver made a final decision to participate in the AI data center construction and business promotion "after a thorough review," the company said.
Two vehicles will carry the plan. The affiliates are forming a special purpose corporation (SPC) dedicated to building hyperscale data centers and infrastructure, plus a separate GPU services corporation to secure high-performance GPUs (the accelerator chips that train and run AI models) and provide related services. Hyundai AutoEver, the group's IT and software affiliate, has confirmed its participation in the GPU services corporation.
What does this change for Hyundai?
The Saemangeum facility will act as a supercomputing hub for the group's R&D. Hyundai plans to use it to build capabilities in physical AI — autonomous driving, robotics, and manufacturing AI — rather than selling raw compute to third parties, at least initially.
Hyundai hasn't shared full specifications for the data center. But the company has previously said it aims to invest 5.8 trillion won ($4.3bn) in data centers at Saemangeum AI Valley that could host 50,000 GPUs. That figure puts the site among the larger AI compute builds announced in Asia.
"The establishment of the AI data center SPC signals that investment in the Saemangeum AI Valley has entered full swing," a Hyundai Motor Group official said. "We will proceed without setbacks with not only the AI data center but also related businesses, centering on the HMG Saemangeum office."
How will it be funded?
Hyundai said it is actively coordinating financial support measures for the data center. The efforts build on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed this year with the Korea Development Bank, the Export-Import Bank of Korea, the Industrial Bank of Korea, and the Korea Credit Guarantee Fund, among others, to fund the wider Saemangeum AI Valley development.
State-linked bank financing, in other words, sits behind the project alongside equity from the five affiliates.
What is Saemangeum AI Valley?
The 1.1 million sqm (11.8m sq ft) site in North Jeolla Province is being developed by Hyundai Motor Group as what it calls a "self-sustaining, circular future industrial ecosystem." Its planned components include:
- AI data centers
- A robot manufacturing cluster
- Gigawatts of solar power generation
- A water electrolysis plant producing clean hydrogen
- An "AI Hydrogen City"
The combination of on-site power and hydrogen infrastructure matters for data center economics. Hyperscale compute campuses consume enormous amounts of electricity, and co-located generation reduces reliance on the national grid.
A growing track record
Hyundai Motor Group is a South Korean chaebol (conglomerate) headquartered in Seoul, with roots dating back to the 1940s. Its Hyundai Engineering unit has already built data center credentials elsewhere, winning contracts to develop facilities in Pohang, Gunsan, Incheon, and Gumi for other companies.
The Saemangeum build is different in scale and intent. Previous contracts were for clients; this one serves the group's own AI ambitions, anchored by the supercomputing hub and the dedicated GPU services company.
The timeline is long. If construction begins in March 2027 as targeted, first official services would arrive roughly three years later in early 2030 — a schedule that leaves room for shifts in chip supply, financing terms, and demand for AI compute. Hyundai says it will push ahead on all fronts, not just the data center, from its Saemangeum office.
