SK Hynix reports third-quarter results on October 28, and the FactSet consensus is demanding: revenue of 98.202 trillion won, operating profit of 76.995 trillion won and net profit of 61.418 trillion won. Revenue and operating profit would both be records. All three numbers are forecasts, not reported figures.
The print matters beyond one company's profit line. SK Hynix and Samsung together account for roughly 60% of global DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) revenue and more than 80% of HBM (high-bandwidth memory) revenue. Their disclosures carry outsized signal value for the wider memory market.
"Memory is a real-time gauge of AI appetite." That, in essence, is how Billy Leung, a strategist at Global X quoted by Bloomberg, frames the stakes. Chipmakers' results, in his view, must show the boom rests on genuine orders rather than announcements. That shifts investor focus from big tech's capital-spending pledges to what suppliers can actually book.
What does the quarter change for shareholders?
Start with net profit. One-off gains tied to the Kioxia stake flattered the prior quarter's bottom line, so a sequential decline there would not by itself signal deterioration. Revenue and operating profit offer the cleaner read.
Even so, the bar is high. Record figures alone won't answer how durable this profitability is. Investors will weigh HBM revenue, pricing, the order book and guidance for the year ahead.
An HBM4 roadmap with a date
Korean media reported Tuesday that SK Hynix targets mass production and shipment of eight-layer HBM4 to Nvidia in the second quarter of 2027. That's a firmer reference point than any dividend chatter — but it's a target, not a confirmed supply commitment. It evidences neither booked revenue nor completed execution.
The market liked it anyway. The stock closed Tuesday up 5.2%. The gain isn't attributable to HBM4 alone; hopes for an additional distribution and a friendlier mood toward AI equities also supported trading.
The 16 trillion won dividend question
Parallel to the operational story, Dong-A Ilbo has reported a possible special dividend of around 16 trillion won, with proceeds from the sale of the Kioxia stake cited as a potential funding source. SK Hynix has not confirmed the plan. The company said yesterday it is reviewing various measures to return capital to shareholders, with no final decision.
Keep the threads apart. A distribution is capital allocation. HBM4 plans concern future operations. The latter's credibility hardens only when the company speaks concretely about demand, orders and execution against that 2027 delivery target.
A counterpoint from the capital markets
If the earnings forecasts lean optimistic, the shelving of Solidigm's planned US listing last week supplies the counterweight. MarketWatch reported the IPO was put on ice amid unfavorable market conditions and the share-price trend.
The postponement does not signal weaker memory demand. It shows that operational strength and the market's willingness to absorb new equity are different things. A distinction worth holding onto as October 28 approaches.
For SK Hynix shareholders, the dividing line stays clear. A possible special payout would be an additional return of cash. The longer-term valuation must be earned by a core business that backs lofty expectations with hard results — and a credible read on demand.
