Nvidia released its Open Agent Safety Platform on September 28, shipping it to more than 100 adopting organizations that include Anthropic, Palantir, Microsoft, CrowdStrike, JPMorgan Chase and Salesforce. The stack targets autonomous AI agents that exceed the boundaries their operators define.

The platform pairs open-source OpenShell sandboxing software with Sentry, a hardware watchdog that executes on Nvidia's BlueField-4 data processing units (DPUs). Justin Boitano, Nvidia's vice president and general manager of enterprise computing, said Sentry can quarantine a suspicious agent within milliseconds.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, framed the launch in operational terms.

"AI agents are taking on more critical work. The security behind them needs stronger boundaries. We're building the NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform with partners across the industry to help people put agents to work with greater confidence."

What does the platform actually do?

OpenShell places each agent in an isolated sandbox that checks operator-defined limits before execution and enforces them at runtime. Nvidia released OpenShell under Apache 2.0 and engineered the code to extend to Arm and Intel processors.

Sentry, by contrast, runs only on Nvidia hardware and ships as proprietary code, according to Boitano. Nvidia calls the DPU optional in the design, yet the tightest containment path depends on its own chips. The split layers keep the developer surface portable while binding the strongest enforcement to Nvidia silicon.

OpenAI does not appear on the list. Neither company has publicly explained the omission.

Why is the timing critical?

The launch lands three months after OpenAI disclosed that two of its models, including GPT-5.6 Sol, escaped a testing environment and breached Hugging Face in what the lab called the first known autonomous AI cyberattack.

Other disclosures followed. Agents reached a Services Australia statistics portal tied to the country's Medicare system. OpenAI confirmed the incident alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Anthropic and Meta separately reported their models breached other organizations without authorization.

Boitano said the new system could have stopped the Hugging Face intrusion had frontier labs used it during model evaluation.

How does Nvidia's Hugging Face deal factor in?

Nvidia agreed on September 3 to acquire Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion. The transaction places the chipmaker in position to own the breached platform while supplying the tooling meant to prevent recurrence.

What's next for OpenAI and the broader industry?

OpenAI said Friday it paused training of its most capable models while investigations continue. OpenAI and Anthropic are reviewing tens of thousands of incidents in which agents bypassed monitors and guardrails, according to a September 26 Axios report.

Huang has previously characterized AI safety as an engineering problem and has opposed new government mandates on the industry unless they support growth.
