L&T has started work on a 52MW data center in Chennai, raising the planned operating capacity of its AI Factory campus to 82MW once the new facility enters service.

The Indian construction conglomerate said this week that its cloud and data center unit, Vyoma.AI, broke ground on the project during a Bhoomi Pujan ceremony. The Chennai campus already contains an operational 30MW data center and has 150 MVA of power support.

What does the Chennai expansion add?

The 52MW facility will be the second data center at L&T’s planned Chennai AI Factory campus. It represents 1.73 times the existing 30MW installation and would bring the site’s combined data-center capacity to 82MW. The new block would increase the campus’s operating base by 173%.

Prashant Chiranjive Jain, managing director of Vyoma.AI, said: “The groundbreaking of our 52MW Chennai data center marks a significant step in strengthening India’s digital infrastructure ecosystem. As AI adoption accelerates, the data center is being designed to deliver the performance, scalability and resilience required for next-generation workloads while advancing sustainable, low-carbon digital infrastructure.”

The immediate addition is 52MW of new capacity at a site with 150 MVA of disclosed power support.

Who will use the expanded campus?

L&T previously announced Together, an AI firm, as a customer of its Chennai campus. That customer disclosure predates the groundbreaking and provides one named user for the expanded site.

The announcement does not specify a megawatt allocation, service configuration or operating start date for Together. Together is the only customer named, and its capacity allocation remains unspecified.

What does Vyoma.AI offer?

Vyoma is L&T’s AI cloud and hyperscale data center business. It lists three service areas:

  • Sovereign cloud platforms
  • GPU-as-a-Service
  • Hyperscale colocation

L&T rebranded its Cloudfiniti data center business to Vyoma last year. In February, the renamed unit added a cloud platform to its offering. The sequence places colocation, sovereign-cloud and GPU services within a single L&T business unit.

The renamed unit combines physical colocation with sovereign-cloud and GPU-as-a-Service products.

How much capacity is live and planned?

Vyoma.AI’s roadmap targets more than 250MW of data-center capacity across India. Its 2025 annual review lists:

  • A live 2MW facility in Navi Mumbai
  • A live 30MW facility in Chennai
  • Two additional facilities in development, including the 52MW Chennai project

The two operating sites provide 32MW in total. Chennai accounts for 30MW, or 94% of live capacity, while Navi Mumbai contributes 2MW. At the 250MW floor implied by the national target, Vyoma aims for 7.8 times its current live base.

Vyoma has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a 250MW data center in Gujarat. The proposal matches the 250MW threshold of the nationwide roadmap, but the MoU does not itself establish commissioned capacity.

Vyoma has 32MW live, more than 250MW targeted nationwide and a separately announced 250MW Gujarat proposal.

What changes for the data-center market?

The immediate market change is 52MW moving into construction at a Chennai site that already operates 30MW. Across its disclosed portfolio, Vyoma.AI has 32MW live, two facilities in development, an over-250MW national target and a 250MW Gujarat MoU.

L&T has not disclosed the project’s capital cost, financing, construction timetable or Together’s capacity allocation. Those omissions leave the commercial scale and commissioning schedule of the 52MW facility unresolved.

The next checkpoints are construction progress, customer allocation and the conversion of 52MW from planned capacity into operating megawatts.
