Abu Dhabi's G42 has signed memoranda of understanding to develop AI and data center infrastructure in Greece, marking the group's latest expansion into Europe.
The agreements, announced with Greek infrastructure investor Copelouzos Group, cover a proposed "AI factory" in the country. Khazna Data Centers would lead development of the physical infrastructure. Core42, G42's sovereign cloud and AI arm, would supply the cloud and AI compute layer. Neither party disclosed the planned data centers' specifications, locations or investment value.
What does the deal actually cover?
Three entities divide the work. Copelouzos Group brings large-scale infrastructure and energy experience. Khazna builds and operates the facilities. Core42 provides the compute stack that turns a data center into an AI factory. The structure mirrors how G42 has deployed projects elsewhere: local partners on the ground, group subsidiaries on the technology.
Khazna operates 30 data centers today, with more under construction. Its footprint centers on the UAE, but the company has projects planned in Italy and Egypt. Core42 has announced or launched sovereign AI infrastructure capacity in the UAE and runs partnerships in the US, France and Italy. It has also partnered with Northern Data's Taiga Cloud.
Who is Copelouzos Group?
Founded in 1972, Copelouzos Group is one of Greece's largest infrastructure investors. Its assets span:
- transport
- energy
- commercial real estate
- construction
- airports
- exhibition centers
Christos Copelouzos, the group's CEO, framed the deal as both a technology and a strategic positioning play. "Our partnership with G42 brings state-of-the-art, world-class AI infrastructure to Greece and strengthens the country's position as a strategic digital and energy hub in Southeast Europe," he said.
He added: "By combining our experience in large-scale infrastructure and energy with the expertise of Khazna and Core42, we aim to build an AI factory that will support the digital transformation of the Greek economy, attract new investment and create highly skilled jobs."
What does this change for G42 in Europe?
The MoUs extend what G42 calls its "Intelligence Grid" — the group's term for its distributed compute and AI platform — into another European market, after France and Italy. H.E. Mansoor Al Mansoori, CEO of G42 International, described the ambition in broad terms.
"Our ambition is to help countries build the infrastructure, capabilities and applications needed to unlock AI for the benefit of their society," Al Mansoori said. "Building on the long-standing strategic partnership between the UAE and Greece, these agreements mark an important milestone in expanding G42's Intelligence Grid across Europe, bringing together advanced compute infrastructure and proven AI platforms for government and industry."
He said the work would proceed "by working alongside trusted local partners and in alignment with European standards," aiming to deliver "lasting value to Greece's economy and people."
The ownership question
G42 is chaired and majority owned by Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the brother of the UAE's president. Tahnoun serves as the UAE's national security adviser and chairs MGX, one of the backers of the Stargate AI infrastructure project. That ownership profile has drawn scrutiny in Western markets as G42 expands abroad, and it forms part of the backdrop to any sovereign AI deal in Europe.
For now, the Greece agreements remain memoranda of understanding. No data center details, timelines, capacity figures or financial commitments have been published. The next concrete signal will be whether the AI factory moves from paper to permits.
