Spec summary
- Cadence demonstrated bounded Level 5 autonomy in one domain on June 1, 2026
- Synopsys claimed in July that RTL validation runs up to 50x faster with 20% more coverage
- Siemens' Fuse agent launched March 16, 2026, with self-verifying updates announced July 26
- Empyrean is China's largest domestic EDA vendor and has been state-controlled since December 2024
- No agentic EDA product is generally available; Synopsys targets GA by end of 2026 with 50+ engagements

Synopsys said in July that its agent-driven RTL validation runs up to 50 times faster than its own non-agentic flow, with 20% more coverage. That ratio leads a year of competing autonomy pitches from Cadence, Synopsys, Siemens, and Chinese vendor Empyrean.
The three US vendors and Empyrean dominate chip-design software, taking a chip from specification to manufacturable layout. Each pitches an "autonomous engineer" agent built around reasoning models.
Rob Knoth, senior group director of strategy and new ventures at Cadence, called the June 1 Computex demo "what we call bounded Level 5 in one domain." Most super-agent tech sits at "I'd say advanced Level 4," he added.
What do the vendors actually claim?
Cadence's ChipStack, in early access since February 10, names Altera, Nvidia, and Qualcomm as early users. Cadence said RTL validation could run over 40x faster, cutting "a typical five-week verification loop to less than a day" in a Nvidia deployment.
Synopsys' AgentEngineer portfolio spans seven agents across verification, implementation, AMS, manufacturing, simulation, and analysis. Vendor claims include:
- 2x, up to 5x in select cases for spec-to-verified-RTL versus a four- to six-month team effort
- 25% to 40% debug-cycle reduction in early evaluations
- 2x token efficiency against a customer's own agents
Siemens' Questa One Agentic Toolkit, announced February 27, ships five agents: RTL Code, Lint, CDC, Verification Planning, and Debug. Its Fuse EDA AI agent, launched March 16, coordinates at least nine tools, including Solido, Aprisa, Calibre, and Tessent.
How do vendors describe autonomy?
The three US vendors use level ladders; Siemens skips numbers. Cadence moves from optimization AI through conversational LLM, complex reasoning, agentic workflows, and finally "full autonomy" with minimal human intervention.
Synopsys' framework progresses from single-agent single-step actions to multi-agent complexity. Anand Thiruvengadam, executive director of product management at Synopsys, told Tom's Hardware Premium that "human engineers will and must always be in the loop" and that "the crucial approval checkpoints are still going to be human-driven." Customers over time "might relax and take away those checkpoints," he said.
What about the back end?
Back-end gains are smaller and harder to verify. Knoth noted that some tool runtimes run "days to weeks … just running the tool itself," and a tool call returning a value in "hours to days" gives the AI industry "a much different problem to solve."
Cadence's InnoStack runs parallel experiments from synthesis to ECO execution; ViraStack handles custom and analog design from drawing to simulation. Siemens' Solido improves characterization turnaround by more than 10x and cuts token cost 5x to 10x.
STMicroelectronics' Gianbattista Lo Giudice said the Solido Layout Analyzer helps "cut down the time we spend debugging complex design blocks by weeks."
Empyrean, China's largest domestic EDA vendor and state-controlled since December 2024, is shifting toward token-consumption pricing. Chairman Liu Weiping said September 9 that its agent cut a layout task from four weeks to one. TrendForce reports 3D verification moving "from two to three months to less than a month."
What infrastructure underlies all of this?
The four stacks largely run on Nvidia's Nemotron reasoning model family and the OpenShell sandbox with kernel-level isolation.
Nvidia this week launched the Open Agent Safety Platform, combining OpenShell with the Sentry reference design — an "out-of-band watchdog" on BlueField-4 DPUs that can quarantine an agent in milliseconds.
Cadence, Synopsys, and Siemens are among more than 100 organizations working with Nvidia on the platform.
What ships by year-end?
No agentic product is generally available. Synopsys targets general availability by end of 2026 with 50+ engagements underway. Cadence's AuraStack, its PCB and advanced-packaging agent, is also due in 2026, with ChipStack Level 5 early access slated for the second half. Siemens promises Fuse updates with self-verifying capabilities. Empyrean's unnamed platform remains in development.
Startups — ChipAgents, Cognichip, Agentrys, Silimate, Ricursive Intelligence — have entered the field, most funded since December 2025. The big three continue acquiring, from ChipStack to simulation vendor Ansys. As Knoth put it, the trend points toward "an array of specialized engines" fueling the workflow end to end.
