Spec summary
- ABB launched Infinitus, an integrated source-to-rack DC power portfolio for 800VDC data center architectures
- DC distribution can deliver energy efficiency gains of more than five percent, worth megawatts at large campuses
- Future GPU rack generations from Nvidia and hyperscalers could reach 1MW per rack
- The first DC-native facilities using the full portfolio are expected operational within two to three years
- ABB has developed DC technology for more than 25 years across multiple segments

ABB has launched Infinitus, an integrated source-to-rack direct current (DC) power portfolio that the company calls the industry's first, built for data centers moving to 800VDC architectures to serve high-density AI workloads.
The Swiss-Swedish industrial firm said the first DC-native facilities deploying the complete Infinitus portfolio should be installed and operational within two to three years. The range includes ABB's Infinitus solid-state transformer technology and a static medium-voltage UPS, both already in production.
Why is ABB pushing DC now?
The driver is rack density. As GPU-heavy deployments grow, Nvidia and hyperscale operators are preparing for future rack generations that could reach 1MW per rack. That jump in density requires a shift to DC architecture, and multiple vendors have begun offering products tailored to 800VDC designs.
Efficiency adds to the case. ABB noted that DC distribution in data centers can deliver energy efficiency gains of more than five percent. At larger campuses, that margin translates into megawatts of recovered capacity — though the company acknowledged efficiency is not the only factor in the architecture decision.
What does the portfolio actually contain?
Infinitus is a suite of DC solutions rather than a single product. According to ABB:
- An integrated source-to-rack DC portfolio, the first of its kind in the industry per the company's claim
- Infinitus solid-state transformer technology, in production
- A static medium-voltage UPS, in production
- Building blocks supporting both DC-native and hybrid AC/DC data center architectures
Giampiero Frisio, president of ABB's electrification business area, said: "ABB has pioneered DC technology for more than 25 years across several segments. We are working closely with chipmakers, hyperscale customers, supply partners and industry bodies to set the standards and the pace for the roll-out of high-efficiency DC architectures."
Who else benefits beyond AI data centers?
Frisio pointed to adjacent energy-intensive sectors. "Infinitus is the first portfolio providing the building blocks for any data center architecture - either DC native or hybrid AC/DC - to power next-generation AI chips efficiently," he said. "This technology will bring similar energy efficiency gains to other energy-intensive industries such as large-scale manufacturing, renewables and marine operations."
That positions the portfolio beyond the AI infrastructure buildout. Manufacturing plants, renewable energy installations and marine operators face comparable power distribution challenges, and the same solid-state transformer and UPS technology could apply.
What is the timeline?
ABB frames Infinitus as a near-term product line, not a concept. Both core components — the solid-state transformer and the static medium-voltage UPS — are in production today. Full DC-native facilities running the complete portfolio are expected within two to three years.
The launch puts ABB in direct competition with other suppliers racing to serve the 800VDC transition, as the industry coalesces around standards for powering racks that draw close to a megawatt each.
