Spec summary
- $29 billion total investment expected at the 1GW+ Goodnight Campus in Armstrong County, Texas
- Crusoe broke ground on the project in June 2025 and confirmed Google's tenancy on September 28
- Phase one covers four buildings and 530MW; phase two adds three buildings and 500MW
- Two adjacent wind farms — Goodnight 1 and Goodnight 2, each 265.5MW — supply the campus
- Google committed approximately $40 billion to Texas cloud and AI infrastructure through 2027
Google will occupy Crusoe's under-construction 1GW+ data center campus near Amarillo, a project carrying an estimated $29 billion in total investment, the companies confirmed on September 28.
The site, named the Goodnight Campus, sits at 10001 Lima Road in Claude, Armstrong County. Crusoe broke ground in June 2025 and confirmed Google's end-customer role after months of speculation about the hyperscale tenant.
"Building the future of AI requires a new kind of infrastructure, starting with energy," said Chase Lochmiller, CEO and co-founder of Crusoe. "Crusoe's strategy is to build AI factories directly at the source of abundant, low-cost energy."
What does the campus contain?
According to planning filings Crusoe submitted in July, the Armstrong County site will eventually include at least six single-story buildings:
- Four buildings, each spanning 805,380 sq ft (74,820 sqm)
- Two buildings, each totaling 484,955 sq ft (45,055 sqm)
Independent tracker Aterio Research puts the final count at seven buildings and capacity above 1GW, structured in two phases. Phase one covers four buildings and 530MW. Phase two adds three buildings with 500MW of capacity. Aterio expects the layout to mirror Crusoe's Abilene campus.
How does the power arrangement work?
The campus connects directly to two adjacent wind farms operated by Serena:
- Goodnight 1: 265.5MW, operational
- Goodnight 2: 265.5MW, under construction
When output exceeds campus demand, surplus power flows into the grid. Lochmiller framed the Amarillo build as a continuation of Crusoe's energy-first model: "The Armstrong County campus is a prime example of this energy-first strategy. We're bringing new, affordable clean energy online. We broke ground in June 2025 and are building at the same swift pace we set in Abilene."
What is Google's wider Texas footprint?
In November 2025, Google committed approximately $40 billion to expand cloud and AI infrastructure in Texas through 2027. The plan covers existing campuses in Ellis County plus three new sites planned in Armstrong and Haskell Counties. The Amarillo project now anchors that Armstrong County build.
The deal marks Google's second major collaboration with Crusoe. The companies previously partnered on Project Tembo, a 2.7GW data center campus near Cheyenne, Wyoming. Crusoe paused work on Tembo in June "at the request of our customer." Subsequent reports indicated Google's subsidiary Jupiter Star Holdings, LLC, had taken over the Wyoming site. Crusoe has not commented on the substitution.
What else is Crusoe building in Texas?
Crusoe's Texas portfolio now spans multiple gigawatt-scale developments:
- A 1.4GW data center campus under development in Childress
- The Abilene site serving OpenAI, with additional capacity set to be leased to Microsoft
What cloud contracts has Crusoe secured?
Crusoe's cloud division signed AI infrastructure deals with Perplexity and Thinking Machines.
Under the Perplexity contract, the search company will train models on Crusoe's dedicated Nvidia GB300 NVL72 clusters and serve them through Crusoe's managed inference service. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Lochmiller positioned the partnership as end-to-end: "The fastest-moving AI companies need infrastructure that keeps pace across the entire model lifecycle and scales with them as they grow. Perplexity is building the future of how people find answers, and Crusoe is a key partner in making that possible, from the first electron to the last token."
The Thinking Machines agreement runs $65 million annually. Crusoe will supply Nvidia HGX B200 systems to power the lab's inference workloads through Crusoe Managed Inference.
"Crusoe Managed Inference took us from evaluation to production quickly and met the standards we hold our own systems to, giving us the scale and economics to reinvest in the research at the core of what we do," said Myle Ott, ML Infra Lead at Thinking Machines Lab.
The Thinking Machines deal pushed Crusoe Managed Inference's annual recurring revenue past $100 million.
