atNorth will invest €2 billion ($2.24bn) in a new 75MW data center campus in Salo, Finland, with operations scheduled to begin in Q3 2028. The Nordic operator disclosed the project, named FIN05, this week.
The Salo site sits roughly 115km west of Helsinki and 52km east of Turku, in southwest Finland. The first 75MW phase is power-secured. The 28.6-hectare campus has a grid-connected pathway to 230MW, of which up to 160MW supports IT load.
What does the FIN05 build include?
FIN05 will connect directly to Finland's national grid. AtNorth plans to enter long-term Power Purchase Agreements with local energy suppliers. The operator will also recover waste heat from the site and route it into local reuse schemes, the announcement confirmed.
The €2 billion figure covers the full 230MW envelope. The IT-to-grid ratio — 160MW of compute against 230MW of grid capacity — points to a hybrid-cooled rather than fully liquid-cooled design at this stage.
"FIN05 is an opportunity to develop critical digital infrastructure while working with the region to create lasting local value," said Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth. "We are exploring how local energy partnerships, flexibility solutions and heat reuse can contribute to the wider energy system and community."
How does FIN05 fit atNorth's Nordic pipeline?
AtNorth currently runs seven data centers across Sweden, Iceland, and Finland. In Finland, the company operates two facilities around Helsinki. It is also developing FIN04, a 60MW project in Kouvola with a pathway to 430MW.
Additional sites are under development in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Salo and Kouvola together expand atNorth's publicly disclosed Finnish pipeline by up to 660MW of total potential capacity at full build-out.
The Salo campus also advances atNorth's vertical-integration approach. Heat reuse and local PPA partnerships tie the facility into the regional energy system rather than operating it as a stand-alone load.
What does the Salo region gain?
Salo Mayor Anna-Kristiina Korhonen framed the investment in jobs. "The new data center will create valuable employment opportunities during both construction and ongoing operations, while generating wider economic benefits for local businesses," she said.
Korhonen added that the development "strengthens our position as an attractive destination for innovative industries and supports sustainable long-term growth for our community." The 28.6-hectare footprint and multi-phase build-out imply multi-year construction staffing and recurring operations roles.
AtNorth confirmed the campus will recover waste heat for local reuse schemes, in line with the company's stated energy-partnership model.
What is atNorth's ownership history?
AtNorth began life in 2012 as Advania Data Centers, assembled from three Nordic operators: Icelandic public-sector IT firm Skyrr; Sweden's Kerfi, which traces back to the Nokia spin-off Datapoint; and Norwegian player Hands.
The company de-merged from the Advania Group in 2017 and adopted the atNorth brand. Swiss investment manager Partners Group acquired atNorth in 2021. Equinix and CPP Investments bought the operator earlier in 2025, placing one of the largest independent Nordic colocation platforms under the control of a global interconnection operator and a Canadian pension fund.
The change in ownership coincided with an acceleration of atNorth's Nordic build-out. The Kouvola and Salo projects together account for the bulk of the operator's publicly announced future capacity outside its seven operational facilities.
