TSMC plans to double its 2nm production capacity by 2027, a move that would widen its lead over Samsung Foundry to 66.6 percentage points, according to a BigGo Finance report.

The figure quantifies a gap that has widened steadily as TSMC consolidates control of the leading-edge contract chipmaking market. Samsung Foundry, the only other manufacturer shipping chips at comparable process nodes, has not matched TSMC's capacity commitments at 2nm.

What does the doubling mean for capacity?

Doubling 2nm capacity by 2027 sets a concrete target for how fast TSMC can bring advanced silicon online. The timeline places the expansion within the current investment cycle, not a distant roadmap item. Two things follow from the number itself:

  • TSMC expects demand at the 2nm node to justify twice the output it has today.
  • Samsung's share of that leading-edge demand shrinks further as the gap widens.

The 66.6 percentage-point spread gives suppliers, chip designers and investors a single figure for measuring how far the two foundries have diverged.

Who is affected?

Chip designers seeking 2nm capacity will face a market in which one supplier controls the overwhelming majority of output. Customers planning products on the node — principally high-performance mobile and AI processors — will allocate capacity with TSMC or wait in line.

Samsung Foundry must either close the gap through its own capital spending or compete for customers on price and process variants at older nodes. The report offers no figure for a Samsung capacity response.

What happens by 2027?

If TSMC executes the doubling on schedule, the foundry market enters 2028 with a structural imbalance at the leading edge. The 66.6 percentage-point gap becomes the baseline against which every quarterly market-share report gets measured.

The number to watch is 2027 — that is when the capacity lands.
