Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX is in talks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) over the launcher's $16.8 billion TeraFab project in Grimes County, Texas. The exchange marks the first public acknowledgement of chip-fabrication discussions between the two companies.
"Just discussions, but something may come of it," Musk wrote on X, replying to a user sharing a report by Taiwan-based journalist Tim Culpan. No binding agreement has been disclosed, and both companies have stopped short of confirming a deal.
What is TSMC reportedly considering?
Culpan, citing sources familiar with the situation, reported that TSMC was exploring cooperation structures tied to its ongoing Texas expansion. The chipmaker has scaled its Arizona manufacturing hub significantly since 2024, and a Lone Star State footprint would extend its U.S. advanced-node capacity and shorten shipping distances for time-sensitive silicon.
The most plausible scenario, Culpan wrote, has TSMC owning and operating a new fab while SpaceX contributes equity and/or guaranteed wafer purchase agreements. Alternative structures — including a foundry-as-a-service contract — remain under evaluation.
A DigiTimes report in late September 2026 stated that TSMC was weighing plans for up to six advanced chip fabs across Texas. None of those proposals has been finalized, Culpan added, and other cooperation agreements are also being considered.
Where did the TeraFab concept originate?
Musk first floated the TeraFab at Tesla's annual shareholder meeting in November 2025. He argued that extrapolating the best-case chip-production trajectory from existing suppliers still would not meet demand, justifying a facility he described as far larger than Tesla's existing gigafactories.
In March 2026, Musk confirmed plans for an Austin, Texas semiconductor plant adjacent to Tesla's headquarters, structured as a joint venture between the automaker and SpaceX. Intel announced its entry into the project the following month, with Musk later stating the fab would adopt Intel's 14A manufacturing process.
How large is the facility expected to be?
Musk described the project in August as the largest and most valuable building on Earth, stating it would reach 50 times the size of the Pentagon when complete. SpaceX has said the facility will employ at least 3,000 people, many drawn from Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County.
In June 2026, Grimes County commissioners approved a 100 percent property tax abatement for the project in a 4-1 vote covering three separate proposals. The abatement shields the development from local property taxes for the agreed term.
What does the TeraFab need to produce?
SpaceX has not disclosed specific process nodes, production volumes or wafer-start targets for the facility. Musk has framed the project as serving Tesla, SpaceX and adjacent Musk-affiliated entities, with potential overflow capacity offered to third parties.
The TeraFab's mix of stakeholders — Tesla, SpaceX, Intel and now potentially TSMC — underscores the unusual scope of the venture. Few semiconductor projects in operation combine an automaker, a launch services provider and two foundry partners.
What does the SpaceXAI rebrand entail?
On a separate track, Musk signaled a corporate naming shift tied to President Donald Trump's relabeling of artificial intelligence as "super intelligence." Musk posted on X over the weekend that AI should be dropped in favor of the new designation.
When asked about renaming SpaceXAI — SpaceX's AI and cloud division — to SpaceXSI, Musk replied: "Yes, we will make that change." No timeline or branding rollout has been disclosed.
The combined announcements suggest Musk is consolidating vertical-integration ambitions across Tesla, SpaceX and the AI/cloud division under a tighter Texas-centric industrial footprint, with the TeraFab potentially serving compute workloads for SpaceXSI as well as hardware across both other companies.
