Spec summary

  1. Letter of intent signed for a data center in Konin, Poland, at a total cost of just under €3 billion ($3.4bn).
  2. Construction begins in early 2027; phase one delivers 100MW, scalable to 260MW.
  3. Konin granted environmental and building permits for phase one in January and May 2026.
  4. Power will come from the Konin coal plant, BESS and solar plants; CGE owns 2MW solar and 18MW wind assets nearby.
  5. Other Polish projects include Polcom's 40MW Skawina facility and a 3.2GW WBS Power project in Choczewo.

Energa Obrót, Central Energy Group (CGE) and the municipality of Konin have signed a letter of intent to build a data center complex costing just under €3 billion ($3.4bn), with construction scheduled to start in early 2027.

CGE leads the project. The build will proceed in stages, with phase one delivering 100MW of IT compute capacity. If the municipality approves further phases, capacity could reach 260MW.

"The scale of this investment speaks for itself," said Paweł Nowak, vice-president of Energa Obrót. "The construction of the Konin Data Center is a milestone in the development of the digital services sector in Poland."

What will the site contain?

First proposed in April 2026, the facility will be built in partnership with real estate consultant JLL. The municipality of Konin granted the environmental permit in January 2026 and the building permit in May 2026, covering the first phase.

The planned site includes:

  • Four buildings housing servers
  • Structures for offices and technical infrastructure
  • 12 underground fuel tanks

How will the data center be powered?

According to Inzynier budownictwa, the facility's power needs will be met by three sources:

  • The Konin coal-fired power plant
  • Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • Several solar energy plants

CGE already owns generation assets in the region: a 2MW solar plant in Rychwał and an 18MW onshore wind farm in Kraśnica, both in central Poland. A district heating network siphoning waste heat from the server rooms has also been proposed.

What does the LOI mean for Konin?

Mayor Piotr Korytkowski welcomed the agreement, saying the data center could transform the municipality into an AI hub for Poland and Europe. "We also expect significant revenue from property taxes," he said.

For Energa Obrót, the letter of intent ties the retailer directly to one of the largest digital infrastructure commitments in the country. DCD has approached both Energa Obrót and CGE for comment.

Where does the project sit in Poland's data center market?

The Konin scheme is one of several large data center projects announced in Poland in recent months. Cloud services operator Polcom plans a 40MW facility in Skawina, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. In Choczewo, Pomeranian Voivodeship, WBS Power is spearheading a 3.2GW project.

The 3.2GW Choczewo proposal dwarfs Konin's 260MW ceiling, but the Konin project stands out for its staged financing structure and the direct involvement of an electricity retailer in the LOI. Its early 2027 construction start also gives it a near-term timeline relative to larger announcements.

The mix of coal, storage and solar backing the first 100MW phase reflects the practical constraints facing Polish data center developers: grid capacity and generation mix remain decisive factors in site selection.
