Spec summary
- Intro Group will invest $270 million in the first phase of the Kemet Data Center.
- The facility will offer 80MW of capacity across 80,000 sqm (860,000 sq ft) in two phases.
- A 2024 MoU with Oman Data Park valued the full project at $450 million.
- The government approved a $400m data center license for Hassan Allam's digital arm.
- Minister Raafat Hendy met Intro Group board member Sherif Mohamed Abdel Fattah last week to review the project.
Intro Group will invest $270 million in the first phase of the Kemet Data Center, an 80MW facility planned for the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The Egyptian conglomerate outlined the commitment during a meeting last week with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hendy.
The project adds a major private-sector asset to Egypt's push to become a regional data center hub linking Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
What are the facility's specifications?
The Kemet Data Center will span 80,000 sqm (860,000 sq ft) and reach 80MW of capacity across two development phases. Solar energy will supply part of the facility's power. Intro Group has not yet disclosed the investment amount for phase two or a completion date.
The original 2024 Memorandum of Understanding valued the full project at $450m. Intro Technology signed that agreement with Omani data center provider Oman Data Park to jointly develop the site. The current first-phase figure of $270m represents the portion now moving into implementation.
What did the ministerial meeting cover?
Minister Raafat Hendy met with Sherif Mohamed Abdel Fattah, board member of Intro Group, to review the project's progress. According to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the agenda included:
- Designs completed to date
- Contracts Intro Group has signed with suppliers for equipment and systems
- The implementation timeline
- The planned launch date for the facility's services
During the meeting, Hendy stressed his ministry's commitment to creating an "investment-friendly environment" to encourage private-sector development of data centers. The minister also highlighted MCIT's ongoing efforts to attract data center investment and strengthen Egypt's position as a regional hub.
How does Kemet fit Egypt's broader strategy?
Egypt's national strategy for data centers and cloud computing targets a role as a main digital and subsea cable hub bridging three continents. The strategy ties into the country's Digital Vision plan, which aims to modernise Egypt through digital transformation and skills development.
Kemet is one of several recent moves in the sector:
- Last month, Hendy met with a group of US data center developers and a delegation from newly launched firm Heca Data to discuss an integrated zone for hyperscale facilities and AI in Egypt.
- The government approved a $400m data center license for the new digital arm of construction group Hassan Allam, covering data center operations and cloud computing services.
The Hassan Allam license signals that Egypt is courting large incumbents as well as independent operators, while the Heca Data talks point to plans for hyperscale and AI-specific capacity.
What is at stake for the market?
The Suez Canal Economic Zone location gives the facility access to the corridor where a large share of the world's subsea cables pass between Asia, Africa, and Europe. Egypt's positioning strategy depends on converting that geographic advantage into hosted digital infrastructure.
For Intro Group, the $270m first phase marks a significant capital commitment from a conglomerate whose technology arm, Intro Technology, initiated the project through the 2024 MoU with Oman Data Park. The supplier contracts already signed indicate the project has moved past the planning stage.
The ministry has not published a fixed date for the start of operations at Kemet, but the review of the implementation timeline and service launch plans during last week's meeting suggests the schedule is now under active coordination with MCIT.
Executives tracking the wider region can expect further detail on Middle East and North Africa data center investment at the DCN Riyadh event next year.
