John M. Wilson, Google's head of data center global design and construction, has joined Anthropic as a member of technical staff, leading EMEA capacity delivery. The move ends a six-year tenure at the hyperscaler and adds another senior name to a growing roster of Google transplants now building out Anthropic's data center organization.

Wilson announced the change on LinkedIn and framed it around lessons from his infrastructure career. "Leading global infrastructure delivery across data centers and subsea programs taught me two enduring truths," Wilson said. "Scale is humbling, but high-trust teams make the extraordinary feel routine. Clear intent, rigorous operational control, and calm execution will always beat complexity."

On the new role itself, he was direct: "The stakes and scale have never been higher, and I'm eager to get stuck in."

Who is John M. Wilson?

Before joining Google, Wilson served as Amazon's European head of design and construction. His earlier career sits well outside the commercial data center sector: he was chief of staff at the British Army and director of infrastructure at NATO.

That mix of military command experience and hyperscale construction delivery is unusual even among senior data center executives. It aligns with the delivery-focused mandate of his new Anthropic role, which centers on capacity buildout in the EMEA region.

How many ex-Googlers now work at Anthropic?

Wilson is one of a growing number of Google alumni who have moved to the AI lab. The migration spans design, construction, operations, security, energy, and finance functions:

  • Winnie Leung — now Anthropic's head of data center infrastructure
  • Brett Rogers — former Google data center construction lead
  • Liwen Mao — formerly a staff data center system architect, now Anthropic's data center design lead
  • Adam Johnson — joined in October after a decade at Google; now Anthropic's data center electrical lead
  • Peter Sarossy — a 20-year Google veteran, became a data center security engineering staff member in January
  • Zach Miller — left Google after 17 years to become Anthropic's data center operations manager
  • Scarlett Chen — Google data center engineer for advanced technology and innovation, now an Anthropic member of technical staff

What does the hiring pattern signal?

The recruitment effort extends beyond engineering roles. In April, Sana Ouji left Google for Anthropic's newly formed energy team, tasked with working to "responsibly and rapidly scale an ambitious data center portfolio." A month later, Mike Brinker joined from Google to focus on capacity delivery. In June, Asad Malik was appointed head of compute finance and strategy.

The sequence shows Anthropic assembling a full data center delivery pipeline — design, electrical, security, operations, energy, and compute finance — staffed largely with people who built comparable programs at Google.

For Anthropic, the hires address a concrete constraint: training and serving frontier models requires compute capacity at a scale that few organizations can deliver. Recruiting executives with hyperscaler and subsea program experience shortens the path to that capacity.

The moves also mark a shift in where senior data center talent sees the next phase of infrastructure growth. Google built its global footprint over two decades. Anthropic is attempting a compressed version of that buildout, and it is doing so with people who ran pieces of the original.
