Echion Technologies and Proper Voltage have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to co-develop a 1.6MW uninterruptible power supply (UPS) platform named VaultX, targeting AI data centers. The two companies will integrate Echion's XNO lithium-ion anode material into Proper Voltage's existing Vault UPS architecture to create a unified system for the AI data center sector.
The VaultX platform delivers 1.6MW of continuous power, 84kWh of energy capacity, and supports both 480V and 800V rack configurations. The companies claim the system will significantly shorten deployment timelines while mitigating the impact of power swings characteristic of AI compute workloads. The unified product targets operators seeking UPS capacity for AI compute clusters and offers the same voltage options present in Proper Voltage's standard Vault UPS line.
What does VaultX change for operators?
The integration combines Proper Voltage's control and integration stack with Echion's XNO cell-level chemistry. Operators adopting the system avoid redesigning site power infrastructure when swapping in XNO-based cells, according to both companies. The MoU covers engineering integration and qualification work for the combined VaultX product, which both firms describe as a market-leading offering for AI data center UPS applications.
Key VaultX specifications:
- 1.6MW continuous power output per system
- 84kWh total energy capacity
- 480V or 800V rack configuration options
- Echion XNO anode chemistry deployed throughout the cell stack
What is XNO chemistry?
XNO is Echion's proprietary lithium-ion anode material. Echion describes the chemistry as novel and claims it sustains symmetric high-rate charge and discharge in three to six minutes across more than 50,000 cycles. The company says the duty cycles are not survivable for conventional lithium-ion chemistries, making XNO a fit for high-transient UPS applications such as AI compute.
"AI data centers need exactly what XNO was built for, which is extremely high charge and discharge rates sustained across tens of thousands of cycles," said Jean de La Verpilliere, CEO of Echion. "Our materials and cells are built for duty cycles that aren't survivable for conventional chemistries, and collaborating with Proper Voltage enables us to implement these capabilities in a market-leading UPS platform and ensure that operators can benefit from VaultX in the shortest possible amount of time."
How does the integration work?
The agreement pairs XNO cells with Proper Voltage's Vault UPS platform. Proper Voltage develops control and integration products that allow advanced batteries to operate reliably in power systems without requiring complete redesigns of upstream power equipment. The two companies will collaborate on qualifying XNO cells for deployment within the Vault architecture.
"Our architecture was purposely designed so that operators can adopt new and emerging battery technology without redesigning their power systems, which is why integrating XNO into our Vault architecture is straightforward," said Charlier Welch, CEO of Proper Voltage. "What this system changes for an operator is the business case."
Who are the partners?
Echion Technologies develops advanced battery anode materials and operates from Cambridge, UK. Proper Voltage develops control and integration technology for advanced battery systems and operates from Carlsbad, California.
The MoU is non-binding. Neither party has disclosed commercial deployment dates, volume commitments, or pricing for the VaultX product.
