Anthropic has secured a BB+ credit rating, opening the way for roughly $60 billion in AI chip financing now being arranged on Wall Street, according to CoinGape.

The BB+ grade sits two notches below investment grade on the standard scale. It marks the highest tier of speculative debt. For a company at Anthropic's growth stage, the publication of any rated assessment is itself material; the market has waited on a number before large institutional commitments could clear committee.

What does the rating actually change?

It moves the financing from concept to syndication. Banks usually require a published rating before committing balance sheet to a multi-billion-dollar loan. Without it, debt investors lack a benchmark for pricing, and the deal stays in committee.

The financing, reported near $60 billion, ties to AI chip procurement. Frontier model developers burn capital mostly on accelerator hardware. The largest line item in any modern AI lab's budget is now the cost of the chips that train and run the models.

How deals of this size are typically structured

Wall Street's role is arranging the package. A syndicate of lenders each takes a share of the commitment, then places portions with institutional investors. The mechanics mirror any large corporate loan, but the underlying collateral is unusual. AI chips depreciate fast, and they sit inside a thin supplier base.

Standard features in AI chip financings of this type:

  • A lien on chip inventory or on purchase contracts not yet fulfilled
  • Tenor of five to seven years to match hardware depreciation
  • Pricing set as a spread over SOFR or another major benchmark
  • Covenants requiring minimum liquidity and chip-use milestones

The $60 billion figure is large for an AI-specific financing. Comparable debt arranged for peer companies has generally come in below $30 billion. A deal of this scale would reset expectations across the sector. Anthropic would join a small group of AI labs with rated, bank-led debt rather than relying only on equity and cloud commitments.

What does this change for investors?

The BB+ print carries trade-offs. Speculative-grade paper pays higher coupons than investment-grade tech debt. Default risk is also higher. The buyer is betting on continued revenue growth from AI services, on stable chip supply, and on an orderly refinancing window five to seven years out.

The risk cluster around this paper is narrow but real. Hardware collateral loses value as new chip generations arrive. Supplier concentration adds pressure; one vendor slip can thin the entire collateral pool. Export controls could reshape the market for advanced accelerators overnight.

Anthropic has not commented publicly beyond the CoinGape report. Rating-agency websites and Federal Register filings will show the formal record once published. The reasoning behind the BB+ placement, when disclosed, will set a reference point for every AI chip financing that follows through 2026 and beyond.
